Open Forest AG and Freedom Holding Corp. Sign Memorandum of Cooperation to Develop Carbon Certification in Kazakhstan

Almaty, Kazakhstan – Open Forest AG and Freedom Holding Corp. have announced the signing of a memorandum of cooperation focused on the development of carbon certification in Kazakhstan. The key areas of this partnership include enhancing carbon market infrastructure, engaging stakeholders, and encouraging investment in climate projects that promote sustainable development in the region.


The document signing ceremony took place during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. The signatories were Timur Turlov, CEO of Freedom Holding Corp., and Rado Dragov, Head of Validation at Open Forest AG.


The initial phase of this collaboration will involve the certification of carbon units accumulated through the Aral Sea ecosystem restoration project. To ensure the transparency and reliability of carbon credits, the parties have agreed to implement methodologies and standards tailored to international best practices and Kazakhstan’s local conditions.


Additionally, the memorandum outlines plans to develop regionally scaled climate projects to address environmental challenges and strengthen cooperation across Central Asia. Partnerships will also be established with the private sector, NGOs, and academic institutions to support innovation in carbon management.


The memorandum includes the creation of educational initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of carbon markets, exploration of funding opportunities for climate projects, and the application of technologies to improve the transparency of carbon accounting.
